Honeywell Logic Manager / IPC-620 Conversion

Since Honeywell has announced the discontinuation of manufacture of certain components of the Logic Manager (LM) and IPC 620 processors, end users have been searching for solutions to replace obsolete Honeywell systems. In 2005 Honeywell announced its plan to support LMs and 620LCS with recycle parts through 2012. This was contingent on the non obsolescence of LM circuit board subcomponents. Honeywell had previously announced the following LM parts would no longer be manufactured:

  • RTD input 8pt
  • Pulse/Quad input
  • 240 vac input
  • Universal AI
  • Parallel I/O
  • 24 vdc I/O rack power supply
  • Half Rack

The IPC 620 processor has been used in stand-alone applications as well as packaged with a UCN interface module and sold as a Logic Manager for use with a Honeywell TDC3000 system. Customers are faced with 3 options to address the obsolescence of these systems. Option 1 is repair of existing boards as they fail. This is rapidly becoming a more expensive and risky approach as board level components become obsolete as well. Option 2 is replace the Logic manager (LM) with Honeywell's Master Logic PLC. The Master Logic PLC is a full fledged PLC that is more than capable of replacing the functionality of the IPC 620 processor. However, industrial clients looking for ways to reduce training and spare parts inventory costs prefer to use their standard PLC. This eliminates the extra training and inventory costs.

SEACON Engineering has worked closely with clients and hardware vendors to develop tools and methods to convert the LM/ IPC-620 logic to Rockwell's ControlLogix platform and is in the process of developing other tools to reduce the cost of replacing obsolete control systems.
